“Kua kore e kaha ki te kōrero; ka oho ko te manawa anake, manawa paku; ka kīia tēnā he manawa kiore (W 1971:174). / No longer able to speak; only the heart is active and the breathing is shallow; that is said to be the breath of a dying person. - Te Aka” And this is how we have the idea of 'the heart is only active, and the breathing is shallow.' Finally the last phrase in this breakdown: “ka kīia tēnā he manawa kiore” ka kiia tena - Ka is the inceptive tense , meaning it lets us know of something new, some kinda change, an additional piece of information relating to things spoken of. 'ki' means to say, -ia is the passive voice suffix, 'tena' is 'that' (which had been spoken of). he manawa kiore - He is the indefinite marker, manawa kiore refers to one's breath, one's heart being weak. Kia ora! Naumai tautimai e hoa! Welcome to this part of the internet. You may be wondering what kinda space this is? Well it's a space to normalise the speaking of te reo Maori. As someone that lives quite far away from the homeland, it is quite rare to come across any Maori language speakers. That's how this place came to be. Anyways, this is just a quick introduction. If you haven't checked out my total immersion Maori language podcast, -- Please feel free to have a listen here: A Maori Podcast I have a few ideas for this space.  1. Have regular grammar breakdowns of certain phrases. 2. Produce some practice quizzes to benchmark progress. 3. Have weekly study sessions together (probably via Discord as that seems quite accessible. Though I am open to other places too.) 4. Setup coffee and korero meetups online and in-person where possible. 5. Have a monthly Q&A session. Hoi ano, ka nui, ka waiho i konei, that's all for now.  Kia ora! - Ihira
